SUMMARY:The Practice of Tonglen - April
DESCRIPTION:The Practice of Tonglen\nHow to Open our Hearts and Change our World\, One Breath at a Time \nThis retreat is of particular interest to those who are familiar with meditation and the practice of loving-kindness and who wish to deepen their practice. \nTonglen lies at the very heart of training in compassion in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. Literally translated ’tonglen’ means ‘giving and receiving’. Tonglen is one of the most powerful compassion meditations to unblock our natural capacity for love. It frees our innate healing energies of wisdom and compassion to transform ourselves and the world we live in. \nUsing the medium of the breath\, the practice of Tonglen offers us a way in which we can actively develop fearless compassion and directly work with suffering. Kirsten DeLeo will introduce and guide the practice and explore the questions that arise when we engage in the practice. \nPrerequisite\nWe request that anyone wishing to attend this retreat has a foundation in the practices of loving-kindness and meditation either at Dzogchen Beara or elsewhere. \nWhat to expect\n\nshort talks\nguided meditation sessions\ndiscussions groups\nperiods of silence\ngentle movement exercises (suitable for everyone)\ntime for rest and relaxation\n\nWhat people say about Tonglen\n“Kirsten totally embodies all that she teaches. I’m coming away a lighter\, more empowered individual with the wonderful tool of Tonglen“.\n– Eleanor \n“The Tonglen retreat was just what I needed at this moment of my life to help me process becoming a parent and also the death of a friend. It’s a very practical and helpful practice to help with the challenges of daily life. Thank you all.”\n– Orla \n“I am leaving with a happy\, open heart\, which will no doubt be challenged but I have been given a tool to practice with and I am grateful.”\n– Áine \nLocation\nThe retreat will be held in our Temple\, which is a modern example of a traditional Tibetan monastery designed to be an inspiring symbol of the Buddha’s teachings for our times.

SUMMARY:A New Way of Seeing - May
DESCRIPTION:A New Way of Seeing\nBank Holiday Weekend of Teachings \nwith Teacher and Author Dominique Side \nHundreds of thousands of people in the West now practise meditation — but is our practice really helping us when life gets difficult and we need it the most? \nThis weekend retreat explores the real-world challenges we face when trying to live a spiritual life\, especially through the lens of Buddhism — a tradition that often contrasts sharply with our own cultural habits and assumptions.\nMisunderstandings\, unconscious biases and cultural conditioning can all get in the way of genuine insight and growth and prevent us from going deeper.\nFor meditational practices to bring real benefit it’s vital for each of us to make personal sense of ideas like wisdom\, karma\, rebirth\, freedom and emotional transformation. \nWith Dominique’s fresh approach to the topic\, you can expect a weekend that will be dynamic and interactive\, with opportunities for personal reflection\, group dialogue and questions & answers. By questioning what the Buddha taught — and our own ways of thinking — the aspiration is to uncover fresh clarity and confidence in our spiritual path. \nWhat people say about A New Way of Seeing\n“A refreshing and stimulating approach to the Dharma. I really appreciate Dominique’s clear and direct style of teaching\, and her knowledge and experience of the subject really shows.” — Jon \nLocation\nThe retreat will be held in the Dzogchen Beara Temple. With expansive views across the bay\, the temple is a modern example of a traditional Tibetan monastery\, a form of architecture designed to be an inspiring symbol of the Buddha’s teachings for our times.

SUMMARY:Moving Into Meditation - May
DESCRIPTION:Moving Into Meditation\n5 Day Silent Meditation Retreat supported by Tibetan Yoga \nThis retreat is for experienced meditators who wants to re-charge and deepen their personal meditation practice and experience how the simple movement exercises of Kum Nye (a Tibetan Yoga) can advance our path. Guided by Kirsten DeLeo and Matt Padwick\, both experienced teachers and long-time meditation practitioners. \nSet in the rugged beauty of the Beara Peninsula overlooking the Atlantic\, this is a unique opportunity to deepen your meditation practice\, experience the power of silence and the support of a group retreat. \nOver the five days\, we will review shamatha-vipashyana meditation in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. Shamatha (calm-abiding) and vipashyana (clear seeing) are methods of meditation\, helping us to gradually calm our usually restless and distracted mind\, allowing us to dissolve negativity and confusion\, and gain insight into the true nature of mind. \nThe retreat is intended for experienced meditators and will include extended periods of meditation as well as silence. The meditation sessions are supported by gentle body movement of Kum Nye. \nWhat is Kum Nye?\nSuitable for people of all ages and fitness levels\, Kum Nye eases the physical body and calms the mind and emotions. It was practised in Tibet as a preliminary to meditation and other advanced yogic practices. The breathing\, postures and movement exercises enable us to sit for longer periods of time in a relaxing way\, and help us to develop mental concentration in a spirit of openness. \nWhat to expect?\nThis is a practice retreat; each day will include periods of sitting and Kum Nye (Tibetan Yoga).\nIn the mornings Kirsten and Matt will offer deepening meditation instructions\, addressing the common challenges and obstacles we can encounter and how to get unstuck. \n\nEach evening concludes with a guided compassion meditation.\nThere is an opportunity for personal interviews with the teachers to clarify your meditation.\nYou will have the choice of sitting on a cushion or a chair for all sessions.\n\nSample Schedule\n10.00 – 13.00 Session 1 (includes silent breaks)\n13.00 – 15.00 Lunch with time for relaxation\n15.00 – 18.00 Session 2 (includes silent breaks)\n18.00 – 18.45 Dinner\n18.45 – 19.30 Session 3 \nIs the entire retreat held in silence?\nMost of the retreat will be in silence. We recommend that participants turn off their phones and\, as much as possible\, stay away from outside communications. This will allow you to slow down and fully receive the benefits from being on retreat\, unburdened by distractions and daily demands. \nKeeping your meditation alive and staying inspired\nAt the end of the retreat\, you will receive \n\nadvice on how to continue\nrecommended resources and further inspiration\naudio recordings of the guided meditation and Kum Nye sessions\n\nWho is this retreat for?\nThis retreat is open to anyone with a regular meditation practice and who feels comfortable to sit for 60 minutes at a time. \nThis retreat is of particular interest if you have done other retreats at Dzogchen Beara like\, Awake\, Essence of Meditation or Natural Great Peace\, as well as shorter meditation programmes and are looking to re-inspire yourself and go deeper with your meditation practice. \nLocation\nThe retreat will be held in the Temple\, which is a modern example of a traditional Tibetan monastery designed to be an inspiring symbol of the Buddha’s teachings for our times.

SUMMARY:Healing with Tara - June
DESCRIPTION:Healing with Tara\nWeekend of Teachings with Marcia Binder Schmidt \nWe’re delighted to welcome Marcia to Dzogchen Beara for this unique weekend retreat exploring the healing power of Tara. Tara is renowned in Buddhist teachings as a female deity associated with compassion and enlightened activity and is often visualised as a source of great healing\, not only for yourself but for others too. \nWhen we connect with the sublime phenomena of Tara through dedication and sincere prayers\, combined with the wisdom and power of her sacred image\, we can overcome obstacles and gather advantageous circumstances. \nTara practice is a gift that we develop and take support from until we ourselves embody her remarkable uniqueness. By doing this\, we acknowledge that we can awaken our inner potential by seeking help from a seemingly outer source. \nAs Tulku Thondup Rinpoche notes\, “Relying on external healing sources is helpful and even essential as long as we are under the control of dualistic concepts and depend on external objects. However\, it is important to understand that the ultimate healing is going beyond dependence on external forces.” \nOptional Online Evening Sessions: Treasuring the Feminine & Treasuring Ourselves \nEveryone is welcome. Find out more on this link. \nAs a participant of this event you are also welcome to join this optional online event Treasuring the Feminine\, which will be streamed live from the temple on Friday evening\, Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon. This is a space where we can celebrate the unique perspective of Vajrayana Buddhism in relation to the feminine principle\, and share experiences and learnings. \nThis project is open for anyone interested in the feminine principle in Vajrayana Buddhism. Together we will explore the teachings of non duality and apply them to the limits of gender identities and social and cultural challenges. \nWe will be hearing keynotes from guest speakers and have designated time for reflection and exchange around Treasuring the Feminine. \nLocation\nThe retreat will be held in our newly opened Temple\, which is a modern example of a traditional Tibetan monastery designed to be an inspiring symbol of the Buddha’s teachings for our times.

SUMMARY:Art and Meditation - June
DESCRIPTION:Art and Meditation\nWisdom in Colour: Open Mind and Fearless Creativity \nThis Event in now full. \nThis popular midweek workshop with David Rycroft explores how artistic activity and meditation mutually nourish each other. By alternating art and meditation\, we bring freshness and ease to our meditation and allow our creative riches to emerge! \nThis event is an invitation to explore our own creativity. In the uniquely inspiring environment of Dzogchen Beara and held in the warm atmosphere of mutual support\, we will all have plenty of time and space to delve into the richness of our own creativity. \nWith the help of art exercises\, one-to-one conversations and group sharing\, and with references to both Buddhist philosophy and art history\, we will enrich our capacity for artistic expression. \nGrounded in meditation\, we see if we can bring a natural ease\, presence and sparkle into our artistic activity. And if we notice how easy it is to become awkward and self-critical\, we can play with that too! \nA series of art exercises invite us to: \n\nLook at the world in a fresh way\, unencumbered by our usual concepts\,\nTap into our intuition and inner powers of inspiration\n\nMeditation sessions will give us the opportunity to: \n\nChange our attitude towards self-critical thoughts and comments\nFind relaxation\, without losing clarity\n\nThere will be plenty of space for sharing connecting with others. \nAll materials are included. All levels of artistic and meditative experience are welcome! \nWhat people say about Art and Meditation\n“A wonderful retreat\, totally inspirational\, opening up new ways of looking and appreciating life\, around us and within us. I was in “heaven” for four days”\n– Barbara \n“I have never enjoyed a course as much as I have Art and Meditation. David‘s patience and his obvious knowledge were key to making this such a success for me. Having never painted before\, I was confident in showing my efforts on the last day. The meditation\, part of the course was excellent”.\n– Colette \nLocation\nThe retreat will be held in the clifftop shrine room of Centre House\, with floor-to-ceiling windows offering spectacular ocean views.

SUMMARY:Through the Looking Glass
DESCRIPTION:Through the Looking Glass\nReshaping the Stories We Live By \nBlending the wisdom of Buddhist philosophy and inspired by Lewis Caroll’s fictional character Alice\, Through the Looking Glass invites us to explore the stories we unconsciously live by. Just as Alice becomes aware of the power of her own perception\, we too can discover how our perceptions shape our world\, relationships and sense of wellbeing. \nWith practical tools for modern living and presented in simple\, relatable language\, this retreat is a chance to explore how shifting our perception can open up new possibilities for connection\, clarity\, and joy. \nThrough interactive exercises\, reflective discussions\, and moments of quiet contemplation (with gentle guidance in basic meditation)\, you’ll explore how small shifts in perspective can create profound changes in your life. \nYou’ll leave with fresh insights\, practical tools\, and perhaps even a little more space to breathe. Whether you’re curious about Buddhist ideas or simply looking for ways to cultivate greater resilience\, clarity\, and joy\, this weekend offers a welcoming and inspiring space for growth. No prior experience with meditation or Buddhism is needed—just an open mind and a willingness to explore! \nLocation\nThe retreat will be held in the clifftop shrine room of Centre House\, with floor-to-ceiling windows offering spectacular ocean views.

SUMMARY:Loving Kindness Weekend - June
DESCRIPTION:Loving Kindness – Setting the Heart Free\nAn introduction to meditations which offer gentle yet powerful tools to open our hearts and minds\, to connect with the immeasurable treasury of love within us and to develop empathy and kindness far beyond conventional limitations. \nLoving-kindness meditation is a Buddhist practice that cultivates goodwill and friendliness toward oneself and others. The practice stems from the wish that all living beings may have happiness and its causes. \nOver 2\,500 years ago the Buddha first taught Loving Kindness as a way to reconnect with that inner wealth of love and to alleviate fear. In modern times these meditations still provide gentle yet powerful tools for opening our hearts and minds. \nIn today’s fast-paced world\, where information overload and societal pressures can overwhelm us\, our hearts can easily close up\, leaving us feeling lonely and anxious. However\, there is a way to break free from this cycle. \nDuring this retreat\, we will explore the stages of the Loving Kindness practice\, offer guidance to overcome obstacles\, and create a practical plan to integrate Loving Kindness into your daily life. Embrace this opportunity to reconnect with the immeasurable treasury of love within you and experience the profound impact it can have on your well-being. \nLoving kindness is a practice which has proved tremendously helpful\, both to those who are already experienced in other forms of meditation and those who are completely new to meditation. \nWhat people say about Loving Kindness\n“Real deepening of both meditation and Loving Kindness in a perfect environment where even the birds are loving.”\n– Karin \nLocation\nThe retreat will be held in our new Dzogchen Beara Temple. With expansive views across the bay\, the temple is a modern example of a traditional Tibetan monastery\, a form of architecture designed to be an inspiring symbol of the Buddha’s teachings for our times.

SUMMARY:The Essence of Meditation - August
DESCRIPTION:The Essence of Meditation\nHelpful and Practical Guidance on Meditation \nMeditation doesn’t have to be complicated or difficult. Many of us can feel we are doing something wrong if our mind is full of thoughts and distractions\, worries and feelings. At the beginning\, meditation is not about having an “empty” mind. If we can simply learn to stay present to all experience as it arises\, that is enough. That is meditation! \nAccording to the Buddhist teachings on meditation\, happiness depends entirely upon our mind and how it perceives\, so it is vital to take care and to become familiar with our mind. By gently practicing a simple method such as calm abiding (shamatha) meditation\, we pacify our scattered minds\, defuse our powerful emotions and overcome distraction. \nIf you want to attain perfect calmness in your meditation you should not be bothered by the various images you find in your mind. Let them come and let them go. Then they will be under control.\n– Suzuki Roshi \nOn this weekend retreat\, we will explore what meditation really is for you with the help of guided practices\, walking meditation and time for discussion and clarification. This retreat is suitable for everyone and no prior experience of meditation is needed. \nWho is this retreat for?\nThis retreat is for you if: \n\nYou are quite new to meditation and want to explore it in a retreat environment in a gentle way\nYou already have a meditation practice but would like to explore new methods or refresh your practice and understanding\nYou are curious about the centre and what we offer and would like to try a meditation retreat\nYou are interested in the relationship between the mind\, thoughts and emotions and how meditation can help\nYou would like to develop a simple practice you can do at home\n\nWhat to expect\n\nMeeting like minded people\nGuided reflections\, contemplative practices and mindful walking\nShort video clips with other relevant teachers\, talks\, practical resources\, group discussions and periods of silence\nTime for rest and relaxation\nEnjoying nature\n\nLocation\nThe retreat will be held in our Temple\, which is a modern example of a traditional Tibetan monastery designed to be an inspiring symbol of the Buddha’s teachings for our times. \nWhat people say about Essence of Meditation\n“Taking place in such a beautiful location\, “The Essence of Meditation” is a wonderful programme. The presenters are kind and gentle\, the instructions and meditations are well founded offering a programme that aptly reflects its title.”\n– John\, Psychologist \n“This was my first attempt at connecting with my mind to find out more about myself. I really loved the way it was guided by Mary and Derek. Will definitely come back. Dzogchen Beara and the people here have a magical vibe\, it touches you in so many ways”.\n– Tushar\, Consultant

SUMMARY:Steps to Freedom
DESCRIPTION:Steps to Freedom\nYou may have attended a meditation course or retreat and have a daily meditation practice\, which is wonderful. But do you know that you can progress further and go deeper into learning how to transform unhelpful negative thoughts and emotions? The essence of all Buddhist teachings is to arrive at lasting peace and happiness through transforming the mind. You can free yourself. \nDuring this weekend\, the progression of steps on the Buddhist path will be outlined in a very essential\, experiential\, and understandable way. The Buddhist path begins and ends with meditation\, which will be the foundation of our practices during the weekend. The different stages in training in love and compassion will be outlined together with a selection of guided practices. \nWe will look at what is meant by ego\, the view of interdependence\, and karma. Understanding the mind and its nature is a crucial part of the path. We will also explore how we can purify and transform our minds\, embody wisdom and compassion and what enlightenment and freedom mean. Emphasis is placed on applying these Buddhist principles and practices to our own mind\, habits and emotions in a way that brings benefit to all areas of our lives. \nIn the spirit of the Buddha\, individuals are encouraged to question\, clarify\, explore and test the teachings and practices until they arrive at a personal conviction. There will be time for exploring the topics\, small group discussions\, guided meditations and contemplations\, and as well as seeing how to continue afterwards. \nThis event is suitable for those who have already attended a weekend retreat or course on meditation or loving-kindness and compassion. \n“I would absolutely recommend Anne and Susan’s retreat. Their pacing\, knowledge as well as how they explained and conveyed everything was really helpful. I am so glad I came.” Mel \nDonation Based Events \nWe are offering this retreat on the basis of Dāna (Generosity) as it’s our heartfelt wish that finances should not be a barrier for people wishing to attend events – so for this event we charge only to cover basic catering & administration costs. \nYou are invited to make a financial offering according to your means\, to help cover the costs of hosting the retreat and to ensure that such events continue into the future\, but there is no obligation. \nDzogchen Beara is a not-for-profit charity and all of our income goes directly to supporting the Dharma and all who benefit from the Centre. \nLocation\nThe retreat will be held in the Dzogchen Beara Temple. SUMMARY:More Than We Think - September
DESCRIPTION:More than we Think\nA Weekend Retreat to Explore the Mind and Heart \nMeditation is far more than a relaxation technique. It has the power to transform the way we see ourselves\, others and the world around us. Meditation helps us connect more deeply with ourselves\, meet our emotions with greater awareness and love\, and find the resilience to meet anything with more presence\, awareness and spaciousness. \nWhether you are new to meditation or already have experience\, this weekend offers the chance to pause and discover your own inner landscape. Drawing on the Mahayana tradition of Tibetan Buddhism\, meditation is based on understanding that our minds are inherently clear and open. Wisdom\, compassion\, and inner peace are already within us—we simply need to uncover them. \nThrough regular practice\, we learn to be less dominated by external distractions and internal streams of thoughts. We discover a new way of meeting thoughts and emotions—with openness\, clarity\, and ease in every moment. \nLocation\nThe retreat will be held in our newly opened Temple\, which is a modern example of a traditional Tibetan monastery designed to be an inspiring symbol of the Buddha’s teachings for our times.
