SUMMARY:Finding Self Compassion
DESCRIPTION:Finding Self Compassion In our Everyday Lives\nWeekend Retreat with John Douglas \nFor most of us\, having a good sense of self esteem seems important. When we have it\, we feel good about ourselves and more positive and motivated in our lives. Conversely\, with low self esteem we are likely to feel bad about ourselves which often leads to a lack of self care and can contribute to depression. \nThe problem with self esteem isn’t having it but how we often try to get it; through self judgement\, social comparisons\, unhealthy competitiveness and holding ourselves up to higher and higher standards that are increasingly difficult to maintain. For many of us\, our usual way of trying to uphold these self-standards is through self criticism . . .ouch! \nSelf Compassion on the other hand has been shown to provide all the benefits of self esteem but without the downsides. Just when our self confidence and self esteem seems to let us down\, Self Compassion can be a wonderful source of comfort that all of us can discover within ourselves. \nIn this weekend retreat John will introduce Self Compassion experientially\, looking at ways to cultivate a deeper sense of warmth and kindness towards ourselves\, not because of how well our lives are going but because of just how difficult our lives can sometimes seem to be. \nIn this course we will be learn and practice skills of how to: \n\nuse awareness to be more present to our thoughts and emotions\nself-soothe some of our more difficult feelings\nbe less self critical and more compassionate to our weaknesses and vulnerabilities\nfeel less alone in the stress and challenges we face in everyday life\n\nResearch has shown that learning to be more compassionate to ourselves can: \n\nmake us happier in our lives\nreduce stress\nincrease our resilience\n\nThis retreat will comprise a mixture of short presentations\, guided meditations and small group discussions. This is not an academic course and active participation in small groups is a key element of this weekend. \nWe hope you’ll be able to join us. \nLocation\nThe retreat will be held in the Dzogchen Beara Temple. With expansive views across the bay\, the temple is a modern example of a traditional Tibetan monastery\, a form of architecture designed to be an inspiring symbol of the Buddha’s teachings for our times.

SUMMARY:Steps to Freedom
DESCRIPTION:Steps to Freedom\nYou may have attended a meditation course or retreat and have a daily meditation practice\, which is wonderful. But do you know that you can progress further and go deeper into learning how to transform unhelpful negative thoughts and emotions? The essence of all Buddhist teachings is to arrive at lasting peace and happiness through transforming the mind. You can free yourself. \nDuring this weekend\, the progression of steps on the Buddhist path will be outlined in a very essential\, experiential\, and understandable way. The Buddhist path begins and ends with meditation\, which will be the foundation of our practices during the weekend. The different stages in training in love and compassion will be outlined together with a selection of guided practices. \nWe will look at what is meant by ego\, the view of interdependence\, and karma. Understanding the mind and its nature is a crucial part of the path. We will also explore how we can purify and transform our minds\, embody wisdom and compassion and what enlightenment and freedom mean. Emphasis is placed on applying these Buddhist principles and practices to our own mind\, habits and emotions in a way that brings benefit to all areas of our lives. \nIn the spirit of the Buddha\, individuals are encouraged to question\, clarify\, explore and test the teachings and practices until they arrive at a personal conviction. There will be time for exploring the topics\, small group discussions\, guided meditations and contemplations\, and as well as seeing how to continue afterwards. \nThis event is suitable for those who have already attended a weekend retreat or course on meditation or loving-kindness and compassion. \nDonation Based Events \nWe are offering this retreat on the basis of Dāna (Generosity) as it’s our heartfelt wish that finances should not be a barrier for people wishing to attend events – so for this event we charge only to cover basic catering & administration costs. \nYou are invited to make a financial offering according to your means\, to help cover the costs of hosting the retreat and to ensure that such events continue into the future\, but there is no obligation. \nDzogchen Beara is a not-for-profit charity and all of our income goes directly to supporting the Dharma and all who benefit from the Centre. \nLocation\nThe retreat will be held in the Dzogchen Beara Temple. With expansive views across the bay\, the temple is a modern example of a traditional Tibetan monastery\, a form of architecture designed to be an inspiring symbol of the Buddha’s teachings for our times.

SUMMARY:More Than We Think - September
DESCRIPTION:A Weekend Retreat to Explore the Mind and Heart with Senior Rigpa teacher Ian Ives\nMeditation is far more than a relaxation technique. It has the power to transform the way we see ourselves\, others and the world around us. Meditation helps us connect more deeply with ourselves\, meet our emotions with greater awareness and love\, and find the resilience to meet anything with more presence\, awareness and spaciousness. \nWhether you are new to meditation or already have experience\, this weekend offers the chance to pause and discover your own inner landscape. Drawing on the Mahayana tradition of Tibetan Buddhism\, meditation is based on understanding that our minds are inherently clear and open. Wisdom\, compassion\, and inner peace are already within us—we simply need to uncover them. \nThrough regular practice\, we learn to be less dominated by external distractions and internal streams of thoughts. We discover a new way of meeting thoughts and emotions—with openness\, clarity\, and ease in every moment. \nLocation\nThe retreat will be held in our newly opened Temple\, which is a modern example of a traditional Tibetan monastery designed to be an inspiring symbol of the Buddha’s teachings for our times.

SUMMARY:Embracing Change - Online Course
DESCRIPTION:Embracing Change – Online Course\nCultivating Resilience through the Wisdom of Contemplation \n“Nothing is permanent\, except change” The Buddha \nContemplation is the practice of being fully present—in heart\, mind\, and body—to what is in a way that allows you to creatively respond and work toward what could be. \nContemplative practices form the basis of many wisdom traditions. During this eight-week course we will learn how to contemplate in the Buddhist tradition and will specifically focus on how in life everything is constantly changing.  \nMuch as we would like to control how things work out\, we cannot always do that\, which can lead to unhappy states of mind. When we contemplate deeply from the space of meditation we can develop more space\, humour\, perspective and be better prepared to flow with how life unfolds. We can begin to embrace the possibilities that change can bring. \nThis course will include guided meditation and contemplations\, discussion\, and advice on how to integrate meditation and contemplation into our everyday life. \n\nEmbracing Change offers a practical\, compassionate approach to support you in contemplating and  adapting to life’s challenges. \n“I found this course to be instrumental in helping me to embrace change in my life. The technique of alternating contemplation and rest was a powerful way to instil changes from my mind into my heart. I met a very open and warm community on this course and it was a very restorative experience.” Aileen \nEmbracing Change was a beautiful online course offered by Susan Browne and Anne Sheehan. Gently led and thoughtfully structured\, it unfolded over eight Thursday evenings. With warmth and compassion\, we explored the ever-present movement of change. We learned to give ourselves space to soften and to be at ease with change. Deirdre\, Ireland

SUMMARY:Finding Unshakeable Certainty
DESCRIPTION:Finding Unshakeable Certainty\nWeekend Teachings with Khenpo Tashi \nHighlights from the Beacon of Certainty by Mipham Rinpoche \nWhat is our practice actually built on? \nMany of us have spent years on the path: meditating\, deepening compassion\, engaging in Vajrayana practice\, receiving profound teachings that have inspired and transformed us. Yet at a certain point\, questions like this begin to arise. What are we truly recognizing in meditation? How do we distinguish genuine understanding from concepts\, experiences\, or passing states? \nThe great masters of the Nyingma tradition understood that these questions cannot be answered through faith alone. They require investigation\, reflection\, and a View that becomes clear through our own experience. \nFor these teachings\, Khenpo Tashi draws on selected highlights from The Beacon of Certainty by Mipham Rinpoche\, a profound text of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. Structured around essential questions of view and meditation\, the text guides practitioners with remarkable precision through the relationship between appearance and emptiness\, analysis and direct experience\, understanding and realization. \nDeeply grounded in the lineage of Longchenpa and Mipham Rinpoche\, Khenpo Tashi has a rare ability to make these teachings feel immediate and alive\, revealing how they relate directly to our own path and experience. \nThese teachings are open to all practitioners with a grounding in meditation and Lojong. Whether you are newer to the philosophical dimension of the Dharma or a long-time practitioner seeking a firmer foundation beneath your practice\, they offer something increasingly rare: the opportunity to develop a clear and stable confidence in the View\, one that can genuinely support the path in every circumstance. \nThe retreat will include periods of silence including during tea breaks and some meal times \nLocation\nThe retreat will be held in our new Dzogchen Beara Temple. With expansive views across the bay\, the temple is a modern example of a traditional Tibetan monastery\, a form of architecture designed to be an inspiring symbol of the Buddha’s teachings for our times.

SUMMARY:Relationships & the Spiritual Path
DESCRIPTION:Relationships & the Spiritual Path\nWeekend of Teachings with Lama Tsering Everest \nIn the West\, people often strive to integrate relationships and raising a family into their spiritual life. This is not always easy\, because our ordinary models for relationships often fail us and our worldly responsibilities seem to conflict with our spiritual aspirations. As a wife\, mother\, and teacher\, Lama Tsering will discuss how our interactions with others can provide opportunities for reflection\, selflessness\, and the maturing of spiritual qualities. \nIn our intimacy with others there can be many opportunities for reflection\, for true selflessness\, and for the maturing of genuine spiritual qualities. One’s ability to love and care for all living beings can begin at home. \nIn the warm\, direct\, and humorous manner for which she is known\, Lama Tsering Everest will discuss how to make relationships an important element of spiritual growth. \nLocation\nThe retreat will be held in our newly opened Temple\, which is a modern example of a traditional Tibetan monastery designed to be an inspiring symbol of the Buddha’s teachings for our times.

SUMMARY:Background to the Dzogchen Pith Instructions

DESCRIPTION:Good in the Beginning – New Year Retreat\nTraditionally the New Year is a time for making a fresh start and reflecting on the direction we would like our life to take. This year’s Good in the Beginning retreat aims to help us start 2027 with a joyful heart. \nThis retreat is an ideal opportunity to reflect on our priorities and to begin the coming year in a way that is in tune with our deeper values in a world that is in desperate need of authentic and caring people. \nDuring this retreat we will take time to consider the preciousness of our lives and see how we can develop a compassionate motivation in all we do. The predominant focus of the retreat is exploring the essence of our mind\, by contemplation\, meditation and time in silence. \nIn an inspiring and supportive retreat environment we can begin to familiarise ourselves with wisdom and compassion so that we can apply them in our daily life and bring more ease to both our own life as well as the lives of others. \nEveryone is welcome to this retreat and no prior experience of meditation is needed. \nContent \n\nGuided meditation and contemplations\nInteractive exercises\nTime for rest\, relaxation and enjoying nature\n\nThe retreat will include periods of silence including during tea breaks and some meal times \nLocation\nThe retreat will be held in our new Dzogchen Beara Temple. With expansive views across the bay\, the temple is a modern example of a traditional Tibetan monastery\, a form of architecture designed to be an inspiring symbol of the Buddha’s teachings for our times.
