Self-Compassion in our Journey with Illness – Online
6 Week Course with John Douglas
Thursdays 11am to 12.30pm, October 6 – Nov 17 (Irish Time)
Living with a serious illness can change our lives. As well as the anguish of physical treatment and the disruption to our lives, many people living with acute or chronic illnesses also struggle with psychological effects such as depression, anxiety and fatigue.
Research shows that having self compassion can not only reduce our symptoms of psychological distress but also increase our personal resources and coping skills, not only for our journey with illness but for life as a whole.
This six week course will introduce simple techniques and practices to help us meet our experiences of illness with compassion and kindness.
The course will be open to a maximum of twelve participants at any stage in their journey with illness and sharing and discussion around our experiences will be a key aspect of the six weeks.
This course will be facilitated by John Douglas, an experienced meditation instructor and psychotherapist who has personal experience of journeying through a life altering illness.
This course will include:
- What it means to have self compassion in our journey through illness.
- A practical three step model of self compassion proven by research.
- Ways to “Self Soothe” when things are difficult.
- A simple practice of Loving Kindness meditation to support us in our lives.
- Different ways to work with difficult emotions.
- Time for sharing and small group discussions.
Please note, there will not be a session on Thursday October 20th.
