The Essence of Meditation

Helpful and Practical Guidance on Meditation
with Derek Corr and Mary Moriarty
Friday 1 September, 7.30pm to Sunday 3 September, 1pm

“If you want to attain perfect calmness in your meditation you should not be bothered by the various images you find in your mind. Let them come and let them go. Then they will be under control”. Suzuki Roshi

This retreat is suitable for everyone and no prior experience of meditation is needed.

Meditation doesn’t have to be complicated or difficult. Many of us can feel we are doing something wrong if our mind is full of thoughts and distractions, worries and feelings. At the beginning, meditation is not about having an “empty” mind. If we can simply learn to stay present to all experience as it arises, that is enough. That is meditation!

According to the Buddhist teachings on meditation, happiness depends entirely upon our mind and how it perceives, so it is vital to take care and to become familiar with our mind. By gently practicing a simple method such as calm abiding (shamatha) meditation, we pacify our scattered minds, defuse our powerful emotions and overcome distraction.

On this weekend retreat, we will explore what meditation really is for you with the help of guided practices, walking meditation and time for discussion and clarification.

“Taking place in such a beautiful location, “The Essence of Meditation” is a wonderful programme. The presenters are kind and gentle, the instructions and meditations are well founded offering a programme that aptly reflects its title” John , Psychologist

“This was my first attempt  at connecting with my mind to find out more about myself. I really loved the way it was guided by Mary and Derek. Will definitely come back. Dzogchen Beara and the people here have a magical vibe, it touches you in so many ways”. Tushar, Consultant
